Director of Development 
Full time, Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Development Director is responsible for raising revenue to sustain Dementia Alliance of North Carolina’s mission by implementing approved strategies designed to obtain funds from individuals, foundations and corporations. This position is central to the continued growth and success of DA-NC and programs impacting the dementia community in North Carolina. 

Dementia Alliance of North Carolina is seeking a leader who is passionate about improving the lives of those living with dementia and their caregivers. This individual should be a self-starter with a natural ability to connect and build relationships with current and potential donors. 

 This individual will be a key strategist for all fundraising for the organization and will work closely with Dementia Alliance leadership.  This position will also work closely with external and internal leadership and volunteers to support fundraising events including walks and galas to ensure event goals are met.

 The Development Director will report to the Executive Director. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Development

  • Aligned with the organization’s strategic plan and in collaboration with leadership,  initiates the creation and execution of DA-NC’s annual development plan including individual, and corporate appeals; major gifts; estate gifts; grants; and special events. 
  • Be a passionate, visible, and informed advocate for Dementia Alliance, actively seeking opportunities to engage with the broader community and to participate in events that position the organization for improved fundraising and visibility.
  •  Works with staff and other leaders to identify potential donors through research, contact with existing donors and other sources of information and serves as project manager in DANC’s outreach and stewardship of potential and new donors. 
  • Manages, cultivates, and stewards a portfolio of relationships with volunteers, fundraisers, supporters and prospects to strengthen relationships and enhance the individuals’ overall impact on the mission
  •  Continuously researches fundraising and development best practices for potential implementation at Dementia Alliance of North Carolina.

Events

  •  Partners with staff and event leadership as needed to develop & execute a successful gala and signature peer-to-peer fundraising walk. 
  •  Plans, promotes, and executes special events including fundraising events, donor cultivation events, donor appreciation celebrations, community meetings, and other internal and external events

Private Grant

  • Working with the Executive Director, cultivate, solicit, and steward private foundation grants
  • Prepare and submit grant applications to private foundations, prioritizing recurring grants from established donors 
  • Research new prospective private foundation donors in order to identify organizations with giving criteria that match the Dementia Alliance mission and programs in order to acquire additional grant revenue for the organization 
  • Manage private grant application processes, updates, and grant reporting 

 Marketing & Communications

  • Collaborates with the Marketing Manager and the Marketing Committee to implement development best practices into DANC’s  electronic communications including websites, social media and mass email communications
  • Develops solicitation and communication materials (e.g., solicitation letters, thank you letters, grant proposals, invitations, online fundraising content, progress reports, and other development and informational materials)

 Operations

  •  Provides support and serves as a back-up to the Administrative Manager in the facilitation of accurate gift recordings, gift acknowledgments, mailing lists and reports using a CRM database
  • In collaboration with leadership and staff, supports creation and implementation of policies and procedures for donor and gift management
  • Complies with all federal and state laws, rules and regulations, all professional standards, and best practices related to fund-raising; update and/or create new internal procedures as needed
  •  Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree (marketing, communications, business or healthcare preferred) with a minimum 5-10 years of non-profit development experience and demonstrated successes with major gift, corporate, foundation, grassroots, and online fundraising.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable and willing to speak in public on behalf of the organization.

  • Strong organizational skills and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. This includes the ability to create well-formatted documents in Word, analyze data in Excel and create professional presentations in PowerPoint.
  • Experience with donor database software, preferably Sales Force, QGiv, Fundraise up or like programs. 
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to use a personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursement).

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position requiring that the individual be available to work during DA-NC’s regular business hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.  Some infrequent evenings and weekends will be required.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
