Caring for a loved one with dementia is a journey filled with challenges, uncertainty, and moments of deep connection. It’s a path that no one should have to walk alone. That’s why caregivers like Cris Charbonneau and Mark Steward have found strength in the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina (DANC)—and why they are stepping up to participate in the Triangle Defeat Dementia Walk.

For Cris, this walk is deeply personal. She’s walking in honor of her mom, a lifelong caregiver herself, who is now living with Alzheimer’s.

“She met people in their hardest moments with compassion, determination, and heart. I don’t want her to be forgotten. She spent her life making sure others felt seen, heard, and cared for.”

Like so many caregivers, Cris found herself navigating the overwhelming complexities of dementia care. But through DANC’s education, resources, and support groups, she has gained the tools to face this journey with confidence.

The Dementia Alliance North Carolina has been a lifeline for me—not just in providing resources and education, but in fostering a community that understands. Their support, tools, and resources, like the Accepting the Challenge training, have helped me to better understand dementia and equipped me with valuable insights.

For Mark Steward, finding support through DANC’s caregiver groups changed everything. When his mother’s dementia progressed, he struggled with the 24/7 demands of care, frequent ER visits, and constant worry. He felt alone—until he found a DANC support group.

I have now been in the group for two years and it has truly saved me lots of worry. When issues arise, I have a place to call and get answers particular to my needs.

Mark walks to honor his mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, all of whom have been impacted by dementia. His mother, Mary, is a beacon of joy and kindness, despite her memory loss.

She is the favorite at her Memory Care Center because she is kind, cheerful, and always willing to share with others. Her name is Mary Steward, and I am blessed to be her son.

Mark’s advice for other caregivers? Find support.

Get assistance from a group of people that know what you are going through and can support you! There are decisions on a daily basis that we have never had to make before, but the collective thoughts of others who have done this before will make everything easier.
