As a local realtor, caregiver support group member, and proud supporter of Dementia Alliance of North Carolina (DANC), Mark Steward is more than just a familiar face in the community; he’s a passionate voice for families navigating the challenges of dementia.

When Mark first found DANC, he was overwhelmed. His mom was living with him, and her dementia seemed to shift from moment to moment, worsening week by week.

“I was staying up 24/7 trying to watch her since she is a wanderer,” he recalled. “We were in the ER almost once a week after a fall or some other issue. I had no idea what was going on or how to keep her safe.”

In his search for answers, Mark came across DANC. A phone call with the staff connected him to a local caregiver support group, and that changed everything. “It was such a blessing,” Mark said. “I was able to get questions answered, talk about what was happening in my life and with Mom, and hear input from people who had been through it before. I’ve now been in the group for two years, and it has saved me so much worry. Whenever new issues come up, I have a place to call for guidance specific to my needs.”

That’s why Mark is quick to recommend DANC to other families who are just starting their caregiving journey. “Everyone needs that support. You can’t do this alone,” he said.

Today, Mark understands the urgent need to raise critical funds for DANC. He’s seen firsthand how support and resources can completely change the course of a caregiver’s journey.

“I’m just astounded at where we are with Mom now compared to a few months ago,” Mark shared. “Her resilience reminds me every day why this work matters and why I’m committed to helping DANC continue its mission.”

Not long ago, Mark thought he was preparing for the end of his mother’s life. But with the proper care, everything changed. “She’s laughing, joking, singing, dancing, and even playing basketball and trivia again. The hope in her smile shows me that what looks like the end can sometimes just be a call for better care. That’s resilience.

For Mark, caregiving is about finding meaning in the small moments. “I wish more people understood how much joy they can bring to someone living with dementia,” he said. “It doesn’t take much. Taking time to remember their name, share a smile, or simply say hello. That could be the only positive connection they have all day. It makes them feel seen, and we all want to know we matter.”

That’s where DANC comes in. “DANC equips caregivers with the tools to know they matter too,” Mark explained. “Through support groups, I’ve learned steps to handle challenges with more grace, and to respond in ways that don’t unintentionally hurt our loved ones. That kind of guidance changes everything.”

Mark’s Call to Action at the Gala

At this year’s Gala, Mark has one powerful message for every guest:

“Your loved one can still have a great life with dementia. They just need great care. Pay attention. It’s our responsibility as caregivers to make sure they get it.”

Mark’s words are more than advice: it’s a call to act. Every smile, every laugh, every moment of connection for a person living with dementia depends on the care and support they receive. By giving generously, you’re helping DANC provide the guidance, resources, and hope that families across North Carolina so desperately need.

DANC’s programs reach thousands of caregivers across North Carolina each year, offering them the support, education, and connection they need to navigate one of life’s most difficult journeys. From caregiver support groups and one-on-one consultations to practical resources and local referrals, DANC provides a lifeline for families who might otherwise feel isolated and overwhelmed. Each program is designed with caregivers in mind, helping them not only care for their loved ones with dignity and compassion but also care for themselves.
